Morning Update: U.S. Policy toward China

Both Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) outline their views on U.S. policy toward China in a new edition of the American Chamber of Commerce in China’s China Brief magazine. Both candidates call for increased trade cooperation with China and say the United States should work more closely with China to fight climate change and nuclear proliferation.

SERBIA: Obama said in a statement on Saturday that the Serbian parliament’s ratification of a Stabilization and Association Agreement with the European Union is an “important step in Serbia’s integration into the Euro-Atlantic community, further contributing to the prospect of stability and prosperity in the Balkans.”

VENEZUELA: In a statement Friday, McCain said he is “deeply disappointed” by the Venezuelan government’s decision to expel the U.S. ambassador, and said the United States’ “continued dependence” on oil imports from countries like Venezuela “demonstrates the need to expand drilling for our own domestic sources of energy.”
